Individual Session
Individual counseling sessions, also known as psychotherapy, speaking therapy, or treatment, are a process that involves clients working one-on-one with a professional mental health service person or a clinical psychologist, taking place in a safe, caring, and confidential environment. These sessions allow a client to understand and explore their feelings, understand their beliefs, and their behavior around others. This offers them an opportunity to work through challenging or influential memories. It helps them identify different aspects of their lives which require change, helps them better understand others and their own feelings, create personal milestones, and move towards a positive change.
Group Session
Group therapy is a form of psychotherapy that can include more than one therapist who will work with a group of people at the same time. Group therapy is generally available in a wide variety of places, including private therapeutic practices, hospitals, meeting rooms, offices, and even community centers.
There are a few types of therapy that take place in groups like cognitive behavioral groups, psychoeducational groups, interpersonal groups, skill development groups, and support groups.
The size of a group therapy session can start as small as three to four people, but in general, there are eight to twelve people in a group therapy session.
Family Session
A family therapy session is also a type of counseling or psychotherapy that helps family members to improve communication with each other and helps in conflict resolution. Usually, a family therapy session is provided by a clinical psychologist, a licensed therapist, or a social worker. Therapists working with families from ENK are highly qualified and generally possess a professional degree to deal with issues within a family. In most cases, family therapy is short-term and involves all or some of the family members taking part at a time. They are very useful in conflict resolution.
How does mental health problem affect my life?
The term fit or healthy usually focuses on physical aspects of a human, for example, cholesterol, cardiovascular strength, and other organ-related issues or diseases. But what we forget, unfortunately, are the countless people who suffer from mental health issues that are as distraught or, in some cases, even more debilitating than some of the worst cases of physical illness. Once someone is able to get professional help from any mental health service, it instantly improves their quality of life and makes their day-to-day life a lot easier with the professional support structure. For most of us, however, help is hard to come by due to the stigma and shyness to discuss these issues. They either ignore it and do not look for help, or they just do not have access to a mental health service.
How Common is Mental Illness?
On average, approximately one in five of us experience some sort of mental disorder or illness each year. And out of them, almost 10 percent experience a severe case of mental disorder or illness which significantly hampers life activities, social relationships, and general day-to-day activities.
Mental health problems like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, anger issues, and other disorders can make a day-to-day living almost impossible. On the other hand, nearly 3% of our Bangladeshi population live with substance abuse disorder, depression, and anxiety disorder. In fact, it is estimated that each year, more than 20 percent of the Bangladeshi population experiences OCD, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or some sort of specific phobias.
Why Do I Need Mental Health Services?
While suffering from a mental health issue, a timely intervention through a mental health service can lower the risk of hospitalization and limit the damage it causes to one's physical, social, and mental well-being. A general study on mental health reveals that people who receive timely intervention and support are 90 percent less like to be hospitalized. Quality mental health services also reduce the risk of any chronic stress-related diseases, anxiety-related problems, and even in some severe cases of substance use disorder.
In a word, proper mental health services and timely support save lives and at the same time, improves the quality of life and outlook for people who feel hopeless or lost. If you feel you are suffering from stress or any mental issue that is hampering your day-to-day life, ENK is here to provide the best mental health service in Bangladesh. Do not hesitate to contact us and get a confidential assessment session booked at your convenience.
Status of Mental Health Services in Bangladesh
Bangladesh, being categorized as a lower middle-income country in South East Asia, boasts a population of almost 163 million, which qualifies it as the world's eighth most populated country. Out of this 163 million, almost two-thirds of them reside in rural areas. They have a literacy rate on 75.62% for males and 69.90% for females.
A WHO survey shows for the whole population there are only 4 hospital beds per 10 000 people. Bangladesh faces a huge burden of illnesses arising from mental disorders. Mental health services currently available in Bangladesh are hugely inadequate, especially a lack of public mental health facilities, lack of skilled mental health professionals, lack of transparency in financial resource distribution, and societal stigma. These shortcomings complied together present this country with an inability to execute adequate mental health policies.
Bangladesh produces approximately 7000 graduates each year in medical disciplines throughout the country, but only a few of them choose to specialize in mental health. Even in places where mental health services are available through psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, and clinical psychologists, they have almost no multidisciplinary teamwork, meaning they are not adequately communicating with other doctors to justify the diagnosis and treatment. Also, it is difficult to impossible for rural people to access mental health services, and they are often limited to divisional hospitals, which in many cases are inaccessible to the rural population. And psychiatrists who work at public medical college hospitals are mostly located within big cities only. Within the public sector, only about 260 psychiatrists serve a country of 163 million people, which explains why much of the population is unable to access mental health services.
The out-patient clinic by the Dhaka Medical College was the first of its kind to serve mental health issues starting in 1969. Currently, there are about 50 out-patient mental health facilities in the country, most of those clinics, if not all, are located in cities and urban settings. Although there are some non-governmental organizations (NGOs) providing support for mental healthcare in Bangladesh, there are simply not enough awareness or support centers to satisfy the growing need for support. There is a lack of community-based follow-up, especially for those in rural areas.
